Why Placid exists

Placid began as a small notebook kept by a group of friends in Jakarta who had reached their thirties and noticed that most of the health information available to them was either very technical or very loud. Some pages were written for clinicians; others were written to sell something. Few spoke calmly to an ordinary adult who wanted to understand sleep, food, movement, stress, and routine check-ups.

The name reflects the tone we try to keep. Placid means calm and undisturbed, and we believe a steady voice is more useful than an urgent one. Our articles aim to explain what is generally understood, say where evidence is limited, and encourage readers to take questions to qualified professionals who know their history.

We are an independent editorial project. We do not run a clinic, we do not sell health products, and we do not provide personal medical advice.

What guides our work

Three commitments shape every article we publish.

Clarity before cleverness

We write short sentences, define unfamiliar words, and avoid jargon where an everyday term will do. Where a technical word is useful, such as baseline or resistance training, we explain it in the same paragraph and add it to a plain-language glossary.

Sources over slogans

Claims are traced to public health bodies, peer-reviewed reviews, and national guidance such as materials from the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. When sources disagree, we say so, rather than choosing the most comfortable position.

Respect for context

Food, work, religion, family, and budget differ across Indonesia. We try to offer examples that fit local kitchens, markets, commutes, and clinics, and we avoid assuming that every reader has the same time, money, or access to services.

Editorial principles in our own words

We would rather say “it depends” and explain why than offer a confident answer that cannot be supported.
A good article leaves the reader better prepared for a conversation with a professional, not convinced that the conversation is unnecessary.
Small, repeatable observations are more informative than dramatic experiments.
Corrections are part of the work. When we change something, we say what changed and when.

How to use this site

You do not need to read in order. Some readers begin with the foundations and then move to the topic that matters most this month. Others use the reading room as a browsing space. Whichever way you read, the following habits can make the information more useful:

  • Read an article through once, then note one or two points you want to remember.
  • Check the date and review note at the end of each guide, because recommendations change.
  • Use the food journal or workout notes pages to turn reading into small observations.
  • Bring questions, not conclusions, to a clinician.
  • Tell us if something is unclear or outdated through the contact page.

For a full description of how articles are prepared, read our editorial policy. For limits on what the site can offer, read the disclaimer.

Who we are and where to find us

Placid is edited from a small office in South Jakarta. The team includes editors, a researcher who checks sources, and a reader-liaison role that handles questions and corrections. The masthead is: Ratna Wulandari, Chief Editor; Dimas Prasetyo, Managing Editor; Siti Nurhaliza Hartono, Research and Sources Editor; Bayu Anggara, Reader Liaison and Corrections. External reviewers with backgrounds in nutrition, physiotherapy, and general practice are consulted on selected guides, and their involvement is noted where it applies.
